The Benefits of Using a Hydration Mist

Ever step into a hot, steamy shower and feel your skin just go mmm, that feels good?  Ever get a facial and the esthetician turns on the steam machine and points it at your face?  Well, there’s a reason for that - a little water and moisture can go a long way in terms of skincare.  In fact, skincare experts and dermatologists agree that adding a regular practice of misting can help keep your skin hydrated.

Some folks might say it’s just expensive water, but a hydrating face mist is so much more than that. It's actually a face hydrationg spray.

A hydrating face mist is a nutrient-rich liquid that you spray on your skin to keep it hydrated.  It provides a long list of benefits and is a key step in a skincare regimen to support healthy skin.  The importance of skin hydration cannot be emphasized enough when it comes to healthy, luminous skin. Our skin is constantly exposed to harsh environmental factors, such as pollution and UV rays, which can strip away its natural moisture and leave it dull and dehydrated. And if you live in a drier climate, such as we do here in Colorado, then look out.  A hydrating mist can benefit your skin tremendously by replenishing that much-needed moisture.

Water droplets on skin

Hydration mists offer many benefits for the skin and, as a result, mists have become increasingly popular in recent years. These lightweight sprays can simply be a water-based product, or they can be more functional and include humectants and other beneficial ingredients.

The Science Behind Hydration Mists

Hydration is water, essentially, and is key to flexible and soft skin – hydration keeps the barrier happy, skin is supple and the appearance of fine lines is reduced. The skin has several ways to retain moisture and produces humectants to keep the skin hydrated. As we age, however, the skin produces less of these humectants and it can be helpful to supplement with a hydration spray that contains humectants and other beneficial ingredients. When applied to the skin, these humectants attract and bind water molecules from the environment, forming a protective barrier that helps prevent water loss.

A few humectant ingredients we use in Caraline Skincare Daily Hydrate Face Mist:

Hyaluronic Acid

Also known as Sodium Hyaluronate, hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant that attracts and retains moisture and is a naturally occurring compound in the body, making it a suitable ingredient for almost all skin types.  Whether you have dry, oily, or combination skin, hyaluronic acid’s unique water-binding properties can help maintain optimal hydration levels, leaving your skin feeling supple and smooth.  As we age, our skin loses its natural hyaluronic acid content, resulting in a diminished ability of the skin to retain moisture.

Hyaluronic acid also stimulates collagen production, a protein responsible for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness, and plays an important role in the function of the skin barrier by attracting and retaining moisture.

Glycerin

Glycerin is extremely effective as a moisturizer ingredient that hydrates the stratum corneum, acting as a humectant by absorbing water from the atmosphere and reducing the evaporation rate from the skin surface. It has been shown to help the skin’s natural lipids maintain their structure, which in turn helps fortify the skin barrier and shield against environmental stressors.  Lightweight and non-comedogenic, glycerin is compatible with all skin types, including dry and sensitive skin.  Glycerin also contributes to the skin’s ability to remain supple and supports the skin’s natural exfoliating process.

Hydration mists and active ingredients

Not only does a hydrating face mist deliver moisture and hydration, but it can also be effective in delivering active ingredients to the skin. Hydration mists formulated with a blend of water and nourishing ingredients like botanical extracts, antioxidants, and humectants can not only help hydrate the skin but can provide other benefits such as soothing redness, calming irritation, providing protection against environmental stressors, and restoring balance.

Caraline Skincare Daily Hydrate Face Mist is formulated specifically for older skin, which tends to be drier and contains active ingredients, antioxidants, and botanicals to soothe and support the skin.  Here are some of the key active ingredients we’ve included.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of Vitamin B3, also known as nicotinamide.  Studies have shown that Niacinamide delivers multiple skin benefits, including easing inflammation and calming redness, reducing the appearance of pores, and brightening skin tone. Niacinamide is a well-regarded multi-tasking skincare ingredient that delivers a wide range of benefits for older skin.

Green Tea Extract

Multiple studies, including this one from the NIH, recognize green tea, otherwise known as Camellia sinensis, as providing a wide variety of benefits for the skin. These include the ability of green tea polyphenols and catechins, especially EGCG, to protect skin against UV-induced damage, reduce inflammation, and help skin heal and regenerate. In addition,, the topical use of products containing green tea extract can reduce the production of collagen-degrading enzymes in the skin.

Kakadu Plum Extract

The Kakadu Plum is a fruit native to Australia and is classified as a superfruit thanks to its extraordinary composition of vitamins and antioxidants. These powerful antioxidants protect your skin from damage caused by UV exposure and other environmental stressors.   Rich in vitamins C and E, folic acid, and carotenoids, this extract also contains polyphenols (mainly gallic and ellagic acids) that can help brighten your complexion, reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, and boost collagen production.

Plant and Botanical Hydrosols
Hydrosols, also known as "flower waters," are produced through steam distillation of fresh leaves, fruits, flowers, and other plant materials.  Floral waters are formed during the steam distillation of plant material to make essential oils. They can generally be used safely on the skin without further dilution.  The hydrosols used in Caraline products are made from organic botanicals: rose Damascena, rose geranium, frankincense, cucumber, helichrysum, grapefruit, and lemon verbena. We have created this hydrosol blend of various plants and flowers to address the needs of older skin.

How to Use a Hydration Mist

How often you should mist really depends on your skin type. For dry skin, you can mist several times a day, unless you have oily skin, in which case, once or twice a day should be sufficient. The best way to mist is to hold it about 6 inches away from the face and neck and spray evenly. Close your eyes and mouth and do a slow, 360-degree turn to make sure you’ve hit all the areas, and don’t forget to give your neck a little love and spray there too.  Once you’ve applied the mist, you can either leave it on or pat it dry with clean hands.

An important part of using a hydration mist is to follow up the application with something that will seal in all that moisture.  We recommend using Caraline Daily Nourish Face Oil to lock in the benefits and to keep that moisture on the skin.
