Ah, summer is the season that beckons us outdoors to move our bodies and bask in the sun's warm rays. Whether that’s time spent hiking your favorite trail, kicking back in a hammock, reading a good book at the beach, or taking a morning run with a friend, you’ll likely find yourself spending a lot of time outside, which means constant sun exposure for your skin.

There’s a misconception that you need an arsenal of skincare products lining your bathroom shelf to have an effective skincare routine. The dirty little secret of the beauty industry is to market through fear and insecurity, convincing women that healthy, vibrant skin can only be achieved with an extensive and complicated routine.

Overdoing it with multiple skincare products can do more damage than good. Here's why:

Skin overload: Too many products can disrupt your skin's natural balance and irritate it.

Diminishing returns: There's a point where adding more products doesn't necessarily give you better results.

Ingredient interaction: Mixing too many ingredients can lead to unexpected reactions.

Cost and Time: Purchasing hundreds of products can be expensive and time-consuming to apply.

However, a minimalist approach to skincare can save you time, money, and energy while also giving your skin all the love and care it deserves while supporting the skin barrier.

The less is more approach to skincare is simple: focus on getting the right products packed with quality ingredients that protect, nourish, and rejuvenate the skin. Don’t know where to start? Let’s dive into the essentials for a simple and effective skincare routine!

Summertime Skincare Essentials

Sure, there are times when we have the time and energy to indulge in extra steps in our skincare routine, but the summer draws out the less is more attitude so you can get out outside and have fun.  So, let’s take a look at the essentials you need to protect your skin:

Gentle Oil-Based Cleanser

It’s no secret that oils support healthy, luminous skin. The first step in skincare routines is cleansing with a face cleanser to remove dirt, sunscreen, dead cells, oil, and other impurities that accumulate during the day.

Summertime calls for an oil-based facial cleanser (especially for older, mature skin). Oil-based cleansers work a bit differently than cleansers you may be used to. Instead of applying the oil-based cleanser to the face after dampening it with water, you apply it while the skin is dry and then rinse after. This allows the oil to effectively remove impurities from the skin without stripping it of moisture.

Caraline Skincare will be introducing a gentle oil-based cleanser just for you Fall '24! It’ll be natural, vegan, and cruelty-free and the perfect addition to your year-round skincare routine. Hydrating Face Mist

Face mist is not only refreshing in hot summer months but it is also a key player in hydrating the skin. A good go-to is Caraline Skincare’s Daily Hydrate Face Mist, which contains a combination of plant-based ingredients such as hydrosols, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, organic glycerin, green tea extract, and Kakadu plum extract. These ingredients work beautifully to rejuvenate and protect the skin.

  • Plant Hydrosols: Also known as “floral waters,” plant hydrosols are produced through steam distillation of various sources such as fresh leaves, fruits, and flowers. Caraline Skincare’s Daily Hydration Mist contains rose Damascena, lemon verbena, cucumber, helichrysum, frankincense, grapefruit, and lemon verbena – ingredients that provides moisture and nutrients to the skin. (Oh, and not to mention the bonus: aromatherapy.)
  • Hyaluronic Acid: Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a popular humectant that effectively attracts and retains moisture in the skin. Although it’s a naturally occurring compound in the body, it starts to deplete over time. So, it’s important to apply HA to the skin to keep it smooth, supple, and hydrated.

  • Niacinamide: Niacinamide is helps reduce inflammation, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and dullness. It’s a water-soluble form of vitamin B3 and supports the production of ceramides and fatty acids – both necessary for a healthy skin barrier

  • Organic Glycerine (vegetable): Similar to niacinamide, glycerine is a humectant, meaning that it masterfully attracts moisture from both deep layers of the skin toward the outermost layers and from air humidity. It also provides an extra layer of protection from harmful environmental elements and skin impurities.

  • Green Tea Extract:  The skin benefits greatly when green tea extract is applied because, not only can it help reduce the production of collagen-degrading enzymes in the skin, but it also contains catechins, a class of polyphenols, that have antioxidant properties.

  • Kakadu Plum Extract: This extract has a host of vitamins and antioxidants that can help with uneven skin tone, collagen production, and hyperpigmentation. More specifically, Kakadum plum contains vitamin E, folic acid, carotenoids, polyphenols, and a high concentration of vitamin C, which work together to provide the skin with some much-needed protection and nutrients.

What’s more is that this mist can be used throughout the day whether it be after a workout, in the middle of a beach day, while traveling; you name it. It’ll leave the skin feeling refreshed and smoother with a luminous appearance – and who doesn’t want that?

Caraline Skincare’s Daily Hydrate Face Mist was formulated for older skin, catering to aging skin’s unique characteristics, including reduced sebum production, decreased skin cell turnover, loss of skin elasticity, thinning skin, and a weakened skin barrier. But, before you start stressing about these skin changes, don't worry! They’re a natural part of aging skin, which can be supported with quality products, which can be found right here at Caraline Skincare.

Nourishing Face Oil

As we age, our skin undergoes a multitude of changes, requiring specialized care to maintain its vitality and radiance. Mature skin tends to become drier and thinner due to decreased oil production and collagen loss. To address these concerns, face oils have emerged as an important component of skincare for older women. Unlike traditional moisturizers, face oils possess a remarkable ability to deeply penetrate the skin, delivering essential nutrients and hydration. These oils nourish and rejuvenate mature skin by providing nourishing fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins that support the skin and skin barrier function.

There are a lot of opinions out there about what products and routines are best for older skin, but we are big fans of face oils and the numerous benefits they provide for skin, which is why we created Daily Nourish Face Oil.

It can be counterintuitive to want to apply face oil when thinking about stepping into the sweat-inducing weather awaiting you outside. However, face oil is important for protecting, nourishing, and rejuvenating the skin.

Caraline Skincare’s Daily Nourish Face Oil is perfect for the summertime because it’s fast-absorbing and lightweight. Its plant-based formula is rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and fatty acids that soften, smooth, and protect the skin barrier. Some ingredients include rosehip seed oil, macadamia nut oil, jojoba oil, chia seed oil, and cranberry seed oil, among others beneficial to the skin

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is the ultimate defense against harmful UV rays and other environmental elements. It should be part of your everyday skincare routine and applied after the Daily Hydrate Face Mist and Daily Nourish Face Oil.

It’s recommended to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day. If you’re spending large amounts of time outdoors, applying sunscreen more than once is important since its effects tend to wear off throughout the day. To complement these plant-based skincare essentials we have going on, consider purchasing vegan and cruelty-free sunscreen.

Simple & Easy Summertime Skincare Routine The Caraline Way

Now, it’s time to take our summer essentials and layer them! This routine should be practiced morning and night.

  1. Apply a dime-sized amount of oil-based cleanser to your palm and rub it between your hands before applying it to a dry face. Massage the cleanser for about 30 seconds before rinsing with warm water.
  2. Pat your face dry and follow a few sprays of the Daily Hydrate Face Mist.
  3. Gently pat the remaining mist on your face and neck, then apply a gel, lotion, or cream-based moisturizer to the face and neck.
  4. After applying moisturizer, add three drops of Daily Nourish Face Oil to the palm of your hand, rub, and apply to your face and neck, sealing in all that moisturizer.
  5. Lastly, apply your SPF (exclude this step for the nighttime routine).

The Last Step For Radiant Summertime Skin: Food!

Skincare is often mistaken to only pertain to donning the right products. However, food plays a massive role in caring for the skin too. After all, you are what you eat, so if you want healthy, vibrant skin, it’s important to be mindful of what you put into your body.

Like our summertime skincare routine, eating healthy foods doesn’t have to be complicated. Simply focusing on foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins C and E, and omega-3 fatty acids and can support healthy skin. It can be as easy as incorporating more fruits and veggies into your diet!

Conclusion

Less is more when it comes to skincare routines, especially during the summertime when you're busy having fun outside. Think about simplifying your skin routine to include products that gently cleanse, nourish and hydrate the skin. And don't forget healthy fruits and vegetables in your diet to maintain skin's vitality.
